As someone who follows Arsenal religiously it's really fun to learn new details about negotiations like this.
I love the suggestion of basing a contract around the availability. Basic wage plus minutes bonus. Are you aware of this anywhere? I've heard of it for players with poor availability - often describes as a 'Pay As You Play' contract. And then there are obviously standard match bonus fees etc.
I suppose there are probably all sorts of contractual clauses and bonus systems we don't hear much about.
But what I pointed to in the article was indeed higher minutes/matches-based bonuses for players that teams consider as injury-prone. It makes sense. Whether it happens is another question 😅
The thing I was referring to you suggesting here which I haven't heard of is the idea of a minutes bonus for players with *high availability*. Whereas I definitely have heard of these kind of contracts being given to players with a very poor availability record.
What you suggest is simple and smart - 'you can get a higher wage based on your availability, but *only if it continues* after the new contract'. As you say, it de-risks the club side in granting a bumper contract to a good player made 'exceptional' only by high availability.
I'm sure Arsenal will be onto this or similar next time someone in the 'Ben White 2024' negotiating position stakes a similar claim to a pay rise!
Brilliant analysis.

Hi again,
Fellow Arsenal fan here as well 🤝
Yes, I don’t think there is any such database.

Nice! ❤️🤍

Again, great stuff - what sort of modelling approaches do you tend to use here?
Thank you. For this one I’m replicating really. Other than that linear regressions most of the time. It just so often happens to be enough 😄
Excellent piece, thanks a lot !
